How you can integrate Outset with a Quant Survey

Using Quant panels such as Qualtrics with Outset

If you're running a quant survey and want to send participants directly into a follow-up interview on Outset, it's easy to set up using a redirect link. This guide explains how the integration works and what to watch out for.

Note: this article includes set-up directions for Qualtrics specifically, but other survey platforms (e.g., Decipher, Alchemer, etc.) will have a similar set-up

1. When and why to use this integration

Many teams use Outset to add qualitative depth to survey data. By routing certain respondents into an Outset interview right after they complete a Qualtrics survey, you can:

  • Collect rich, open-ended feedback from target segments

  • Quickly validate hypotheses or explore surprising quant trends

  • Reduce the effort of scheduling live interviews

2. How the redirect works

Outset provides a reusable interview link that you can use across respondents. You’ll place this link on the end-of-survey redirect in Qualtrics. When a respondent completes the survey, they’ll be automatically sent into the Outset interview.

To get this link:

  • Go to the Recruit tab of your Outset survey

  • Select the Recruit on your own option

  • Copy the Shareable Survey Link (e.g., https://api.outset.ai/interviews/public-surveys/abcdefgh12345678/start)

3. Where to place the redirect in Qualtrics

To send respondents into Outset after they complete the survey, you'll need to add a redirect link using the End of Survey element in the Survey Flow.

Here's how:

  • In Qualtrics, go to Survey Flow from the left-hand navigation.

  • Locate the branch where you want to redirect participants (e.g., participants who completed the survey or passed screening).

  • Click Add a New Element Here or Add Below under the desired branch.

  • Select End of Survey.

  • Click Customize on the End of Survey element.

  • Check Override Survey Options.

  • Select Redirect to a URL and paste your Outset link.

  • Save your survey flow.

Tips:

  • Be sure to place the End of Survey element after any necessary embedded data fields. Otherwise, the data may not be recorded.

  • Use branch logic to control who sees this redirect (e.g., screen-outs vs. completes).

  • You can add multiple End of Survey elements if you have different paths for different respondent types.

4. Passing metadata to Outset

To personalize and track responses, you can append dynamic variables from Qualtrics to the Outset link (like a respondent ID, screener status, or customer type). This information shows up in the Metadata field in Outset, and is visible in the Results tab, inside transcripts, and usable for filtering and analysis.

Here’s how to set it up:

  • Use the format ?key={value} to add metadata to the end of your survey link. For example:

  • In Qualtrics, replace {participant-id} and {customer-type} with embedded data variables, like this:

  • The keys you define (like participant-id or customer-type) will become columns in Outset.

  • The values are dynamically pulled from Qualtrics embedded data for each participant.

Common metadata use cases:

  • Tracking respondent or panel ID

  • Passing screener results collected off-platform

  • Segmenting responses by customer type, geography, or survey branch

Important setup tips:

  • Field name matching: Make sure your dynamic variable matches the embedded data field name in Qualtrics exactly (e.g., ${e://Field/ResponseID})

  • Typos: Double check your link formatting — a small mistake can break the redirect.

  • Embedded data setup: Ensure your Qualtrics survey flow includes a step to define and assign embedded data before the redirect.

5. Example final setup

Once the metadata is configured and the link is placed in your survey flow, a participant with ID 12345 and customer type premium would be routed to:

This metadata will be recorded in Outset automatically.

6. Choosing who to route

You can route all respondents into Outset, or only a subset based on logic you set in Qualtrics. For example:

  • Only route participants who meet a certain screening criteria

  • Create different Outset links for different user segments

  • Use quotas in Qualtrics to control volume

Once it's set up, this integration gives you a seamless way to pair quant and qual insights without extra coordination or tooling.
